The Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835 was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. Mexican troops were sent to retrieve a cannon from settlers who refused to relinquish the gun. After a skirmish which resulted in the withdrawal of Mexican troops the settlers fashioned a flag with the depiction of the cannon over the phrase "COME AND TAKE IT." This symbol has remained a hallmark of Texas pride and independence.
